Antarctic Waves

One of the most popular training events at Learning Teaching Scotland is Software in Focus, an event where up to 40 teachers attend to be given software demonstration for a particular curriculum area. This is followed by an extensive hands-on session when teachers can access the wide range of resources we hold in the Technology Centre.

Antarctic Waves was the focus for a Software in Focus event on September 5th, and copiesof the CD-Rom are now held in the Technology Centre and available for preview purposes by teachers. Two fantastic educational projects join forces during science week at the state-of-the art Darwin Centre for an exciting hands-on opportunity to create music and visuals inspired by Antarctic science. Find out how Antarctic science can inspire music and video art.

Give your students a unique opportunity to create a piece of cool music with the BAFTA Award-winning music making toolkit Antarctic Waves. Braunarts, the creators of this innovative software will guide you and your students around Antarctic Waves including demonstrating how to 'surf' through a glacier or fly with an albatross.

Students can also delve into the world of VJ (VJ-ing is like DJ-ing but with video clips as well as music) and test their creative skills in a VJ playground with artists from VJs.net including Coldcut's Matt Black and leading VJ outfits Headspace and Raya.

INSETS
The Antarctic Waves team is interested in setting up INSETS during 2003 about how to make the most of the Antarctic Waves CD-Rom. The Antarctic Waves team is interested in setting up workshops for students during 2003 about using the Antarctic Waves CD-Rom and also about V-Jaying using Antarctic Waves and associated v-jay software. We would like to know how many students and/or teachers would be interested in attending such an event. The Antarctic Waves team is interested in setting up relationships with Teacher Training organisations. Celebrating the unique collaboration of National Orchestra Week (8-16 March 2003) and National Science Week (7-16 March 2003), composeyourself is an exciting new national competition open to students across the UK studying music at AS/A2 level or Higher/Advanced Higher level.

Applicants are invited to create a short musical work inspired by Antarctic Science, scored for 5 to 17 instruments. The winning entry will be performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 16 March 2003. Furthermore, the winning composer(s) will be invited to London for the weekend to attend the première and will be awarded the inaugural British Antarctic Survey Music Award of £500 for the school/college and £100 for the composer(s). Orchestras around the UK may also perform highly commended entries during National Orchestra Week and National Science Week.
